The fog was believed to be a visible and auspicious sign of the breath of nature.

The effect of the mists on the mountain, here obtained with curtains of shaded planes made with inking in different shades of grey, creates two opposing worlds between the impervious path on the ridge and the beauty of the landscape enveloped in mists.

A similar landscape, in full sunlight, is drawn in the panel Koshu Inume toge , from the series of Thirty-six views of Fuji .
