Collection: Georges Braque
(Argenteuil 1882 - Paris 1963)
Georges Braque is considered one of the pioneers of the Cubist revolution.
Although he initially approached Fauvism, he later arrived at Cubism, first analytical and then synthetic, also thanks to his close collaboration and deep friendship with Pablo Picasso: thus in his works space is broken down into compact and geometric masses, background and foreground cease to be distinguishable, forms appear flattened, renouncing depth, and colors become sober and measured. Despite the decomposition of the depicted objects, the overall effect is one of great harmony. Materials previously foreign to painting (newspaper and wallpaper, sand, wood) and familiar objects that acquire new meaning also appear.
Although some aspects of Cubism remain ever-present in his work, in the post-war years his language became less aggressive, more colorful, and more respectful of the reality of the represented object. Braque returned to a more contemplative reading of nature, refined his research on chromatic and tonal relationships, and applied them consistently in all his works.
Alongside painting, Braque devoted great attention to original graphics: his lithographs, often in thematic series related to birds, flowers, and Mediterranean landscapes, and his etchings reveal the same chromatic sensitivity and compositional elegance that characterize his paintings. He also created sculptures and illustrations for books, confirming the variety and coherence of a lifelong pursuit.
