Collection: Sonia Delaunay

(Hradyzk 1885 - Paris 1979)

Sonia Delaunay was a nonconformist and multifaceted woman who revolutionized the history of art, fashion, and costume in the twentieth century. A well-rounded artist, difficult to categorize, whose work went far beyond simple painting as she felt a constant need to bring art into every aspect of daily life.
Together with her husband Robert Delaunay, she theorized the painting movement of Orphic Cubism or Orphism, which saw color as the protagonist of artistic research: complementary colors placed next to each other illuminate each other, giving the sensation of movement and the possibility of representing what is defined as “the third dimension,” that is, time.
Her research on colors and shapes manifested in graphics, decoration, furniture, and especially in fashion. In fact, she took Orphism beyond the confines of the canvas: she created costumes for the theater, collaborated with Coco Chanel, Jacques Heim, and Jeanne Lanvin, and dressed famous actresses like Greta Garbo and Gloria Swanson. In the Atelier Simultané in Paris, her art expanded to fabrics, tapestries, interior decoration, and clothing in perfect creative harmony: in her clothes, abstract art became something concrete and absolutely understandable to a broader and more heterogeneous audience. Other creations she dedicated herself to include mosaics, stained glass, tapestries, books, hats, umbrellas, and even car interiors.

The Chromatic and Feminine Revolution of Sonia Delaunay

Sonia Delaunay was the first woman to have a retrospective dedicated to her at the Louvre in 1964 and to the French Legion of Honor in 1975. Her work undoubtedly contributed to the evolution of clothing and taste in modern decor, and the chromatic revolution that resulted is still a source of inspiration for many artists today.
Delaunay redefined the very concept of “modern woman”, attempting to overturn gender separation in a male-dominated world. Her story is that of a strong and exuberant woman who saw art in everything and managed to overcome family crises, financial difficulties, and two World Wars, never giving up and instead continuing to reinvent herself, coloring her world (and that of others) with the colors of her soul.
