Mara Cozzolino, from Turin, after years of practicing copperplate engraving, approached Japanese woodblock printing mokuhanga in 2011, studying with Paul Furneaux in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Printmakers and with Wuon Gean Ho in Montefiore Conca at the Opificio della Rosa. In 2012, selected along with five other artists from around the world, she attended an artist residency at the foot of Mount Fuji, at the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory in Kawaguchi-ko, where she deepened and perfected the technique. Since 2018, she has been part of the International Mokuhanga Association Board and contributes to organizing international conferences on the mokuhanga technique. In 2024, she will hold her first woodblock printing workshop in Tokyo, and today her works are exhibited in Italy, Japan, the USA, Canada, and several European countries.
The term mokuhanga (木版画) is the Japanese name that translates the word "woodblock printing" and literally means "print" (hanga) on "wood" (moku).
