Collection: Shin-hanga (Hasui, Yoshida and others)
Often referred to as Neo-ukiyo-e, Shin-hanga is a Japanese artistic movement that developed in the early 20th century, reviving the traditional ukiyo-e printmaking, which reached its peak expression and diffusion in the two centuries prior.
Permeated by a nostalgic and romantic vision of a rapidly transforming Japan, most of the prints by Shin-hanga artists depict tranquil places bathed in soft, diffused light with dreamy atmospheres, where one can observe the rural roots and traditional wooden architecture that is gradually disappearing from the urban landscape of Tokyo and the major cities.
Among the main representatives, we remember Hasui Kawase, who almost exclusively reproduces landscapes and city views that do not fall into the genre meishō (of famous places), distant lake and sea landscapes away from tourist paths. Tsuchiya Koitsu stands out for his ability to recreate effects of light with particular tension and lyricism. Okada Koichi, known for his beautifully detailed woodblock prints depicting Mount Fuji. Finally, Eiichi Kotozuka, one of the founders of the Koryokusha publishing house, important for his prints of Japanese cultural traditions, flowers, landscapes, and wildlife.
Finally some Japanese prints from the late 20th century, such as Sunset at Miasa by Tsukasa Yoshida, a master of terrestrial and lunar landscapes, or Autumn Moon over Katata by Katsuyuki Nishijima, which instead of the more common sunset skies over villages or traditional Japanese roofs shows the glow of sunset over a mountain ridge.
