NISHIJIMA KATSUYUKY, Yamaguchi Prefecture 1945

Ogurayama,  1991

Technique: nishikie, Colour woodcut, titled and hand-signed by the artist. (mm. 258x376)

Splendid proof, printed on Japan paper in a total of 500 copies engraved and printed by the author. Perfect preservation with untouched margins.

This evocative print shows us the glow of sunset over a mountain ridge, partly shining through the silhouettes of the trees on the crest. The last colorful moments of the day contrast sharply with the mountain already cloaked in darkness.

Nishijima captures the moment suspended between day and night. The silhouette of the trees, finely carved, creates a vibrant contrast with the sky.

Biography

Nishijima Katsuyuki (b. 1945, Yamaguchi Prefecture) is a popular Japanese woodblock print artist. He began his artistic training in 1964 at the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto, where he studied the technique of woodblock printing ( moku hanga ) until 1968. He then perfected his art by working in the Sosaku Hanga (creative prints) style, carving and printing himself. Common themes are countryside landscapes and city scenes. Currently, Nishijima continues to live and work in Kyoto, producing new editions of his works that are accessible to a wide audience.
