Nishijima captures the moment suspended between day and night. The glow of the sunset over a mountain ridge, partially shining on the peak of the crest through the finely carved silhouettes of the trees, creating a vibrant contrast with the sky. The last colorful moments of the day in stark antithesis to the mountain already cloaked in darkness.
Nishijima Katsuyuki (Yamaguchi Prefecture 1945) is a popular Japanese woodblock artist. He began his artistic training in 1964 at the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto, where he studied the technique of woodblock printing (moku hanga) until 1968. He then refined his art by working in the sosaku hanga style (creative prints), carving and printing by himself. Common themes are rural landscapes and city scenes. Currently, Nishijima continues to live and work in Kyoto, producing new editions of his works that are accessible to a wide audience.
