Commentary
Edward Penfield was Harper’s art director from 1893 to 1899 and designed a poster for every issue of the magazine. Here, a young dark-haired woman holds two cats in her arms, one white and orange and one black, against a salmon-colored background, with the title and month in red. The series, curated by Jules Chéret, was issued by monthly subscription between 1895 and 1900 and comprises 256 plates reproducing the most important posters of the period.
Edward Penfield (Brooklyn 1866 - Beacon 1925), trained at the Art Students League of New York, joined Harper & Brothers at the beginning of the 1890s and became its art director. For Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, founded in 1850 and now the oldest American monthly magazine still in publication, he designed a long series of monthly posters between 1893 and 1899, characterized by simple forms and a limited palette, earning him the title of father of the American poster. He left the magazine in 1901 and continued as an illustrator for Scribner’s and Collier’s.
