Comment
Bird's-eye view, plate no. 32 of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Vertical Tōkaidō (Gojūsan-tsugi meisho zue). Arai hosted an important government checkpoint. Many travelers would sleep during the approximately two-mile ferry crossing across the Imagiri Gulf, at the point where Lake Hamana meets the Pacific Ocean: in the famous Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige, a comedic picaresque novel written by Jippensha Ikku that narrates the misadventures of two travelers along the Tōkaidō, it is indeed said that the crossing took place with extreme slowness and that passengers would end up falling asleep. Hiroshige emphasizes the length of this route by making the boats disappear on the horizon.
