Commentary
Ichi Fuji, ni taka, san nasubi, that is, the three symbols one should dream of on New Year's Day to have good fortune in the new year: Fuji, the sacred mountain, the hawk, taka, soaring high, and finally the eggplant, nasubi, a delicacy.
The hawk is shown in the act of attacking a pheasant, in a massive clash of feathers that almost defies our efforts to distinguish one bird from another. The final focus of the attack is on the contrast of the two heads: the hawk with its eyes wide open, its beak firmly clenched in victory, and the pheasant with its eyes closed, its mouth open in death. From behind the struggle emerges the delicately curled motif of the eggplant leaves and a strangely detached flower on the right (which does not actually seem to be a true eggplant bud), and four fruits amalgamated in the disordered composition. Finally, Fuji, delicately engraved in the background, in the outline of the gray block, above and beyond the twisted dream fantasy of the artist.
