Fumio Fujita (Handa, Aichi, 1933) graduated in oil painting from Musashino Art University in Tokyo in 1956 and worked as a graphic designer for approximately seven years. Around 1963, after moving to Atsugi, he began creating sōsaku-hanga woodblock prints, meaning works conceived, carved, and printed by the artist himself, and exhibited with the Japan Print Association.
His preferred subject is the forest, earning him the nickname “the forest painter”: trees with sharply defined trunks, reduced to their essentials, in which the grain of the wood becomes the texture of the backgrounds and foregrounds. He remained an independent artist, and his woodblock prints, produced in numbered editions and hand-signed, are carved and printed entirely by him. From 1987, he taught woodblock printing at the Odakyu Culture School.
