Collection: Munari Bruno

(Milan 1907 - Milan 1998)

Italian designer, sculptor, and writer, Bruno Munari is considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century art, design, and graphics. At just twenty, he joined the Milanese Futurist Movement of the second generation and distinguished himself with his overflowing and eclectic activity, which included painting, educational and kinetic experimentation, graphic design, advertising, and photography. In 1948, he was one of the founding members of the MAC (Movement of Concrete Art).
As early as 1933, he created the Useless Machines, mechanical devices presented as experimental models that explored perceptual possibilities, making him a precursor of Optical Art, and in 1949 he brought them to the Salto Bookstore in Milan, in an exhibition that marked an important milestone in his research. In 1950, he exhibited his “negative-positive paintings” in Paris.
His graphic production is inseparable from this vision. The graphic sign became for him a research tool on the same level as sculpture or design: a means to explore perception, rhythm, and form. He also gained international recognition for his artistic studies on creative play that aimed to always respect children's intelligence.
