Collection: Aki Kuroda

(Kyoto 1944)

Aki Kuroda is a Japanese artist who spans from painting to photography, from sculpture to architecture, from set design to performance, disciplines and installations that converge in COSMOGARDEN, his project of interactive and “fluid” art that began in 1992. He defines himself as a man in transition between East and West, two worlds that he pours into his works, where simple lines and minimalist silhouettes blend with color and the chaos of graffiti.
Born into a family very open to European culture, Kuroda began painting at the age of three, fascinated by the surrealist magazine Minotaure that his father received from Paris. He then studied art history, traveled, and stayed in New York and then in Paris, where he settled permanently in 1970.
His works are regularly the subject of major exhibitions (Doland Museum in Shanghai, Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Osaka, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, Museum of the Imperial City in Beijing, National Museum in Bratislava, Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin) and are also intimately connected to the literary world.
