Eugenio Carmi was a key figure in Italian geometric abstraction, recognized for his belief that industry, the chosen place of the first phase of his professional life, should be a driver of culture. His series of safety signs is famous, described by Umberto Eco as a brilliant example of industrial semiotics.
A member of the prestigious Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), since the 1950s Carmi chose graphic design and engraving as his preferred techniques, applying a rigor that combined industrial aesthetics and pure geometric forms. His graphic innovation was expressed in the extraordinary chromatic precision of screen printing and lithography, used not merely as reproduction, but as autonomous means to explore the rhythm and flat application of color.
Among his greatest achievements, his optical-geometric research was honored in 1966 with an invitation to the Venice Biennale, where he exhibited his famous Signals, and in 1973 with the International Prize for Graphic Art at the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil.
