A shachihoko , an imaginary creature, a dragon-headed fish, a symbol made up of two water animals, placed on the roofs of houses to protect against fire.
Those who, in the first bath after birth, saw the golden s hachihoko placed on top of the castle, seat of the shogun, were considered true citizens of Edo.
A bird of prey perched on the shachihoko 's tail dominates the city as does Fuji, which alone in its grandeur dominates the heart of Japan.
