This elaborate ornament, common to pagodas, is composed of rings that allude to the nine heavens of the Buddhist universe and culminates in symbolic flames. The temple was built in 1695 in Honjō, on the eastern outskirts of Edo, by a monk of the Ōbaku sect of Zen Buddhism, and was dedicated to the five hundred great disciples of Buddha, the Rakan. Although the complex did not have a true pagoda, it included two unusual structures: a large hall with over five hundred wooden statues of the Rakan and a three-story building with a spiral plan, inside which a symbolic pilgrimage took place through images representing one hundred Kannon temples of Japan, up to a panoramic viewing platform at the top.
Some earlier views of the temple, such as that by Kitao Masayoshi in Ehon Azuma kagami (1787), show more elaborate decorations, perhaps referring to an earlier version of the building. Hokusai had also drawn the building previously, with an ornament of intermediate complexity (a similar print, Goyaku Rakanji Sazaidō, appears in the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji; while a detailed drawing of the finial is present in Hokusai Manga vol. XI of 1833), but in the present image, he clearly pushed towards greater elaboration. In Masayoshi's view, a large crane nest also appears on the roof of the Rakan Hall, a detail that might explain the direction of the line of flying storks depicted by Hokusai.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0405/8110/3766/files/HokusaiOneHundredViewsofMountFuji97.jpg?v=1777459793
