Contemporary chronicles, Wakan sanzai zue (the most probable source of knowledge for Hokusai himself regarding an event that happened 53 years before his birth), report that the effects of the eruption were felt within a radius of approximately 120 kilometers from the mountain.
Hokusai here lets his imagination run wild, in what is less specifically the vision of a volcanic eruption than a representation of the total demolition of the everyday world. Fragments of rock fall from the darkness, but the violence seems to come from another place below, a force that hurls three figures and a virtual catalog of everyday life tools into the air: jars, buckets, doors, planks, clothes, tiles. Several men and a horse are trapped under the debris, while others feverishly struggle to pull or carry their families to safety. It is an accurate image of swirling chaos, in stark contrast to the subsequent plate, which is titled "part two".
