The two wrestlers, easily recognizable by enthusiasts both by their titles and by the characteristic technique depicted, are shown in a famous drawing: Kawazu, on the right and dressed in white, applies a lightning-fast hold in which he hooks his right leg into the left calf of his more massive opponent. This move, which reverses a duel in which Matano initially seems to have the upper hand, is still known in sumo as kawazu-gake or "Kawazu trip," also called "Kawazu's way."
Hokusai depicted this duel on several occasions. An earlier version, contained in Hokusai gashiki (1819), shows a broad landscape with a view across Sagami Bay to Mount Fuji, which appears imposing in the background. In reality, Fuji is not visible from Akazawa, located on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, south of Itō. In this print, the artist reduces the mountain to an almost abstract form behind the wrestlers, marking a transition towards a more symbolic representation of the environment.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0405/8110/3766/files/HokusaiOneHundredViewsofMountFuji62.jpg?v=1777458313
