This composition belongs to the famous series \u003cem\u003eThirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji\u003c\/em\u003e and shares the title with another plate from the same series, where, however, the workers are engaged in sawing a massive squared block of wood. A preparatory drawing of the work also exists, while a similar theme appears in the album \u003cem\u003eHokusai gashiki\u003c\/em\u003e (1819).\u003cbr\u003eThe scene evokes a high viewpoint, as if one were so high on the mountain as to look down at Fuji. The setting is indicated in the province of Tōtomi, corresponding to the southwestern tip of the current Shizuoka prefecture, although it is not possible to pinpoint a precise location.\u003cbr\u003eIn the color version, Hokusai depicts the woodcutters at work on a huge squared piece of wood; in this variant, however, he portrays men who, with axes, are working on an intact tree.
