He meticulously scrutinizes the landscape in front of him and his gaze seems directed not at the mountain, but at the small shrine near a tree overhanging the river. His three servants in matching robes prepare sake, open a package, and pull out scrolls of paper or silk for painting. A heron, perched on a pole, seems to observe the scene. The first comments on the panel saw Hokusai himself in the depicted painter; however, according to Japanese commentators, this would not be possible, as the master did not have the means to support three servants, as shown in the drawing, and they could probably be his disciples.
Nobuo has observed how Hokusai never drew from life, and therefore Shashin in the title would mean “copy of life,” not “from life.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0405/8110/3766/files/HokusaiKatsushikaOneHundredViewsofMountFuji47.jpg?v=1777457786
