The son of Ulrich, a painter and miniaturist, he became a citizen of Regensburg in 1505 and remained there for almost all his life, joining the city council and eventually serving as the city architect. His most celebrated work, the Battle of Alexander at Issus, dated 1529, was painted for Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria.
In printmaking, Altdorfer was a swift and original experimenter. Most of his prints were produced between approximately 1506 and 1525: woodcuts, such as the series of the Fall and Redemption of Humanity, and small engravings of extraordinary delicacy, which bring him close to the so-called Little Masters of Germany. This body of work also includes the Beautiful Mary of Regensburg, a devotional image that around 1519-1520 Altdorfer translated into woodcuts, one of which was printed in color from six blocks, and into a tiny engraving. Around 1520 he also produced several landscape etchings, among the earliest European prints in which the woods, rocks, and sky do not serve as the backdrop to a narrative but are the very subject of the image.

https://www.elenasalamon.com/en/products/altdorfer-albrecht-il-trionfo-di-massimiliano-terzo-foglio-con-due-cavalieri-1517-1518
