Delaunay Sonia

(Hradyzk 1885 - Paris 1979)

Sonia Delaunay is a nonconformist and multifaceted artist who has revolutionized the history of art, fashion and costume of the last century. Together with her husband Robert Delaunay she theorized the pictorial movement of Orphic Cubism or Orphism, which saw color as the protagonist of artistic research; the two work on complementary colors, which when placed next to each other illuminate each other giving the sensation of movement and the possibility of representing what is defined as "the third dimension", or time.
Sonia Delaunay feels the constant need to bring art into every aspect of everyday life. She is a well-rounded artist, difficult to categorize, whose work goes far beyond simple painting. Her research on colors and shapes manifests itself in graphics, decoration, furniture and especially fashion.
In fact, he takes Orphism beyond the confines of the canvas: he creates costumes for the theater, collaborates with Chanel, Heim and Lanvin and dresses famous actresses such as Greta Garbo and Gloria Swanson. In the Atelier Simultané his art expands to fabrics, tapestries, interior design and clothing in perfect creative harmony. In his clothes, abstract art becomes something concrete and absolutely understandable to a wider and more heterogeneous audience.
Other creations she has created include mosaics, stained glass windows, tapestries, books, hats, umbrellas and even car interiors.
She was the first woman to be given a retrospective at the Louvre in 1964 and to be decorated with the French Legion of Honour in 1975.
His work undoubtedly contributed to the evolution of clothing and taste in modern furnishings and the chromatic revolution that resulted is still a source of inspiration for many artists today.
Delaunay redefined the very concept of “modern woman”, attempting to overturn the gender separation in a world dominated by men. Hers is the story of a strong and exuberant woman who saw art in everything and was able to overcome family and financial crises and two world wars, never giving up and instead continuing to reinvent herself, coloring her world (and that of others) with the colors of her soul.

Original color lithograph.
